Vigilance - Hammer of Satan's Vengeance album cover

VIGILANCE was born in 2010 in Slovenia, with influences from VENOM, SODOM, AURA NOIR and many others. These Blackend Heavy Metallars have released a demo and an EP, along with two full-length albums. They are back with their third release "Hammer of Satan's Vengeance". This album comes in with eight tracks and a listening time of over 37 minutes.

The opening track "Prologue" is a 45 second muted instrumental that has a little bit of a Progressive flare. The guitar noodling is perfect and plopped down in starring view. The drums are good, but feel a bit slow against the guitars. That bass though: it's so low and chunky and adds a great amount of depth to the track.

Track two and the namesake of the album comes in with a bit of a Punk Metal guitar to start us out. There is also this Blackened Death Metal feel mixed in there. While some of the track's components are thought out well, the flow is off and the vocals seem to just lie on top of the music. The guitars are an obvious plus, but the over all feel is amiss.

The intro to "Nekropola Tiranov" is really great. The guitar work is done masterfully, the bass is great, and the drums are done thoughtfully, but were a little light in production. The vocals are again on top of the music and sound like they were recorded in a bathroom. The echo takes away a bit from the over all sound. There was a choir like male vocal in here that is an interesting add to the track.

"Legion Kondor", track six, has some of those Heavy Metal wails and you fully expect him to burst out in song. He doesn't, but we do get the gritty shouts and growls. It's an interesting mixture of vocals. The guitars are less noticeable in this track, until about the three-minute mark where they get to have a bit of fun.

The final track, "Zloba II", starts of with some intense guitars and kick ass bass. I thoroughly enjoyed this intro. The drums meshed and matched with the guitars precisely. The guitars continue to impress throughout. This is another track with backing choir vocals. This was the longest track on the album and the best off the album. Generally, in my experience, that isn't the case, ever. However, this track is full of impressive riffs, a nice melody, and a more even production.

VIGILANCE's third album "Hammer of Satan's Vengeance" is OK. Being a young band, I think there is room for improvement and they have the basics down. I believe there are some people who will thoroughly enjoy this album and its rough around the edges presence.
