Vengeance - Sewer Surge album cover

I have to start by issuing a warning about this review. I will be mentioning a certain issue with this release at least twice. That's how much it bothers me. So, this is what my main concern is; the sound on "Sewer Surge" takes me back to the demo times if the eighties and nineties. By what I gather, this is exactly the sound that the Polish band VENGEANCE has been looking for. That does sound like a very deliberate choice. Not only that, the name VENGEANCE makes it hard to find something relevant about the band, as when I start to search on the net, the band with the same name form my country keeps popping up. The same goes for the title of the album, as Google keeps trying to change "Sewer Surge" into Sewer Surfer.

Again I have been let down on receiving information about the band and/or this release, as there was none with my music files. Thankfully the Metal Archives are doing their job. They tell me that VENGEANCE is from Warsaw in Poland, and was formed in 2018. As I have no other facts about the band, let's concentrate on the music. How to describe what these guys actually make. It is an amalgamation of Speed Metal with Traditional Heavy Metal and at times even some Thrash Metal. But "Sewer Surge" also houses some Melodic elements, even if you have to really listen to hear them come out. And that is a pity, as the songs themselves are quite good, rather varied and all brought with the right amount of venom and pizzazz. It makes me smile from time to time, as "Sewer Surge" has a lot of prospective quality. Now comes the time when I have to say that the production is letting the band and especially the record down. "Sewer Surge" could have sounded a lot more impressive if VENGEANCE would have taken the time and effort to improve the sound. I understand the need to wishing to sound underground, but not at the expense of people getting the whole experience of your music.

VENOM is a good example of how your brutal and sometimes almost incoherent sounds can still come together with the right sound. I mention them as I feel that the Polish VENGEANCE does have some similarities with the early stages of the founding fathers of "Black Metal". If only VENGEANCE would have been able to do the same, they might have made an even better impact.
