VATTNET VISKAR, Swedish for "the water is whispering" are a Post Black Metal band founded in Plaistow, New Hampshire in 2010. "Settler" is their second album in those just 5 years, and it seems to be a very good accomplishment for them. They were signed by Century Media record label yet before their first EP was released, and this connection helped them in getting a great progress in their work. In those five years of work they've had the chance to travel in a US tour and a European one.

Personally, I'm having a difficult time enjoying Black Metal, and this one is no different. From the beginning of this album it felt to me as if something in the record was scratched and got stuck in repeat. The drums are too fast in my opinion and not so much related to the music. The second song, "Colony", has a nice guitar riff to begin with, but it doesn't stick around for long. It is only by the seventh song, "Settler" that the music has a sound I can relate to. The guitars were finally making something I can call actual music and not a blur of noise. This is also the first song with an actual guitar solo, and an amazing one at that.

I'm having a real hard time relating to grunt vocals and if I cannot understand the lyrics, the album has lost many points for me. It is not different in this one, since the vocals are nothing but low grunts, sadly not the best ones I've heard. All throughout the album, the guitars were having way too much distortion to it which had undoubtedly interrupted the lines that were good from time to time. Therefore the best song in this album, in my opinion, is "Heirs". At least for the first part of the song there's no distortion in the guitars at all and you can hear the amazing lines created by the guitarist. The drums, for the first time in this album, are not in the way but supporting the guitars and bass. Also for the first time in this album, the bass is heard thanks to some distortion on it. The bassist is, by that song, a great player and it's only a shame there was no chance to hear him earlier. Thanks to all of this great work of all the instruments, the balance was good and the singer had a chance to shine. Even though his singing is not my type, it was much better in this song.

This album is a genus Black Metal one, with many influences that makes him much more interesting. This might not the worst album I've heard, but I didn't like it at all. Even though this is not even close to anything I like, this music sure is interesting and worth listening to, at least once.
