Hello Metal-Temple. VARG have been very active in the last few years, releasing a full-length album at the start of 2016 and an EP at the end of 2015. Yet they strike again with this new EP by the name of "Götterdämmerung", which translates to 'Twilight of the Gods'. The Melodic Death Metal band from Germany seem to be gaining a lot of popularity over their last few releases, which in turn pushes them to release even more material of greater quality.
Going right to the meat of the subject, this EP opens with "Götterdämmerung" - a fast paced and high octane Melodic piece that incorporates everything VARG have to offer in terms of talent. The 4-minute song that inspired this EP has a great melody coupled with a raging vocal performance by Freki.
"Hel" is no different; the steamroller of Pagan Metal is demolishing everything in its path and leaving you wondering what just hit you. The guitar is running wild with some incredible riffs and the songwriting on the guitar track is simply beautiful; it has to be the high note of this piece.
"Beißreflex" also features the guitar a lot, but the vocal performance simply outshines everything else. Going from low to high octaves throughout the song, Freki's range goes incredibly well with the double bass tempo that follows along.
Last but not least, "Knochenpfad" is this EP's surprise factor. Sounding more like an epic journey through the wilderness with animal sounds and deep emotional parts, the pace here is just perfect. It slow down to give you a tense moment and then beats you in the face with double bass drum action between those moments. I was simply taken away by this gem.
I keep on saying that I'm not a fan of EPs, but VARG has made me say otherwise twice now. I think I'll have to rethink the way I've viewed EPs because of these guys. They definitely know how to bring us some incredible material and make it unique enough to want more of those small doses of pure Metal.
