VAEOK are a brand new Black Metal band to 2020. The two men have a good amount of bands that they have worked with, VJS has been with bands like CRIMSON MOON (2007) and NIGHBRINGER (2009 - Current). Michael is also still with KULT OV AZAZEL. So both men know what they are doing, let us find out what they have in store.
"Terricula Nox" starts slowly, with a progressing sound that makes you feel the song will kick into something big shortly. Its very Modern day Black Metal in its approach, you hear this more often than not. The vocals, guitars and drums join in. The keyboard start was a good touch, but only if it is not over used. The melody being built is frantic and frenzied, vocals, I cannot keep up with, but as they seem more in the background at times, it works. The harmonies feel more like Melodic Black Metal, which can sometimes really pay off if implemented well. This song works. The aggressive vocals work so well with the instrumental play, it's a fantastic start to the EP. Also, you can hear that it is their own sound, not a borrowed one, which for me, is always a good thing. The keyboard play does come in towards the end as an outro to the song, but it is very well placed, so it works.
"Atrox" is most certainly not a slow burner; it kicks into gear from the start. The aggression on display is amazing. The instrumentals are keeping up and creating something immense. The frantic build up is still beautifully harmonic and shows the true potential of the duo. The tempo does drop down in certain places, but it is controlled so well that it pulls it off perfectly. There are a few high pitched vocals you may hear from the likes of CRADLE OF FILTH and DIMMU BORGIR thrown in, which work very well too. A strong effort, fill the album out with songs like these two so far and they are off to a winner
"Malaesthete" continues with the mixing of low and higher pitched vocals. The tempo from an instrumental aspect may have dipped, but it is still set higher enough to enhance the song. The melody is still spiking, and in doing so adds depth you may not always see, especially when a good section of the song is slowed down. The slower sections show complete composure and control for what it is they are doing.
"Souls Void" starts off not how I was expecting at all, it is a lot less dark, more life and colour, but less aggression, more Melo Death, excluding the vocals, which have slowed down but not ceased. The melodies are not bad, just not dark enough as once before. The vocal aggression has returned, and it seemingly the lead force on this one. It feels like they played this one too safe and too much emphasis on the keyboards.
A great first effort, the control and changes shown in vocals and instrumentals is fantastic. I'm getting a Melodic Black Metal vibe with this, more DIMMU BORGIR and possibly old school DISSECTION. Keep it up!
