Been to Wacken Open Air twice (1997 and 2001), would like to join for this year's RUNNING WILD farewell(?) gig and only, but have little faith I'll be attending any future festivities held up there in Northern Germany. This specific fest has now grown too big - the biggest in Europe - with sixty or seventy bands performing in three/four stages and a relative number of 70,000+ metalheads banging their heads for 3-4 days in late July/early August, making it kinda impossible for an old-school Metal fan to bear with all trends being exposed over there...Still, for the Metal youth of today, Wacken Open Air is more than a 'must' experience, giving the chance to not only gather a typhoon of names for a cheap price but also depict the up-to-date status of Metal music and bring fans from the world together for music, chatting and holiday. You surely have to be there once or twice to confirm.
Just at the time WOA 2009 takes place this weekend - with grand names like ANTHRAX, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, DORO, GAMMA RAY, HEAVEN & HELL, MACHINE HEAD, MOTORHEAD, NEVERMORE, RAGE, RUNNING WILD, SAXON, TESTAMENT, TROUBLE and U.F.O. hitting the stage - here comes the release of a 'highlights' double disc DVD combo gathering and reminding all things done at 2008's installment. Sold out - as officially announced - since March 2008, the fest was credited for the sole German date of British legends IRON MAIDEN plus hordes of other Metal acts visiting the small village located 75km NW from Hamburg.
The menu is quite rich here, featuring one song by each band that performed back then, while for enough acts there are some mini interviews given too (note with an * in the tracklist above). 'Behind the scenes' or 'in the crowd' or 'out in the streets' footage is served, too, a part for the established Metal Battle is featured plus a fashion week excerpt summarizes every hilarious or outsanding outlook caught on camera. An intro video regarding the implementations in prior for the fest field to be ready plus an outro trailer for WOA 2009 - that's old news by now, of course - wrap up a good package with some glossy booklet full of pics and credits. The sound is fine in general, many cameras have been used to capture the fest's vibe, the transition from on clip/chapter to another could have been way more smooth and...that' it, to cut a long story short.
So:
- You've been there? OK, you'll fancy having such a memorabilia.
- Would like to visit Wacken some time? Well, check out why.
- Wanna chack your country's fest? Haha, see what you'll never see in your town.
- Raised in the 80s Metal likes? Well, this fest - and DVD - are not for you anymore, I'm afraid.
P.S.: Who the hell is MAMBO KURT? What a guy...
