URSINNE is an international 2 piece Death Metal band releasing their debut full length album "Swim With The Leviathan" this June. Both the musicians here are very experienced guys with having already been part of many other celebrated bands in the past like BOLT THROWER, BENEDICTION, HENRY KANE, etc. So with a very innovative album artwork and interesting name, this is a record, I want to dive into as soon as possible. The album starts with a heavy track in "Talons". The riffs are Death Metal-ish, with the juicy thick fast paced riffs and the synching drum beats and the growling vocals, although generic sounding, works wonderfully here. If you dig old school Death Metal, this might interest you. "Hollow Hearse" is another heavy fast paced song, mostly riding on the nasty growling vocals. In bands such as this, usually you find vocals being used miserly, but Dave Ingram's vocals are just very appealing and infectious, if you are a seasoned Death Metal fan. The guitar work does have variety and flavour, which is so far quite reassuring that this is not just another generic Death Metal record. "Devil May Care" has shades of AMON AMORTH's melodic influence creeping in, but still the song has the heavy raw juicy feel to it. "The Chimes Of Midnight" feels like a ride into a dark evil place, which is just creepy enough to make you shit in your pants, but is not physically harmful. "Underworld" and "Serpentine" are tracks that just are full of face melting fast Death Metal. It's worth mentioning here that, the production rightly so is not very polished and is kept a bit raw.

"Bullet Bitten" in the middle of the album, feels like an emotional struggle song, and that is re-emphasized during the small talk in the middle of the song, all the way through amidst the heavy guitar and drum work. A song which probably can be played at an apt suitable timing is "Crazy Horses", which has a much unexpected anthemic gang vocals to it, and sounds like real fun to sing along. "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is a chaotic and less than impressive song, offering nothing interesting or new to the listener. "Turning Japanese" which apparently is a cover of a song by THE VAPORS, is chaotic but interesting, at times bordering insanity with the chaos. "Monsters in the Parasol" which is a QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE cover, is a mid-tempo juicy song, but the guitar work get too chaotic to my liking. The album ends with a cover of SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES 's "Spellbound", which is again another too chaotic for my liking song, but with some really good juicy riffs in there. Both Jonny and Dave are very experienced musicians with having been part of plenty other bands, and the experience and maturity is very much felt in this record. Even when the album feels unidirectional and lacking variety, it comes back with some amazing riff or vocals. "Swim With The Leviathan" is a fine old school Death Metal record for 21^st century and seasoned fans of the genre should dig this, and for a 2 piece band, this is more than what I expected.
