Underflesh - The Sailing album cover

UNDERFLESH is a French Metal piece that I wish I had known before. These guys are Heavy dark and melodic. They are definitely well put together and on top of their game. Unlike other French pieces I've come to be familiar with, these guys are not heavy on the symphonic edge. Most of the vocals are harsh but there are some quite epic clean vocals mixed throughout. One thing I especially like about these guys is their melodic edge. They don't compromise any other elements of their music, and they keep to the basic instruments.

The elements of the music are very well defined. I can that these guys really love what they do. All of the songs are smoothly flowing and unique. The drum work is exceptional throughout the album, whether he's keeping time or doing his thing. The guitar really does a fantastic job of keeping the melody, but not only that but just enhancing the quality of the song. Their harmony is excellent, they all stay together, in and out where need be. The sound itself in some spots seem to have a Black Metal influence, in other spots a Melodic Death Metal flow, and now and then just a raw sense of brutality. They definitely hit a nice range of Metal genres mixing them into a perfection of sound. They change a lot so I did not find myself getting bored with it at all.

Although most of the vocals on this album were harsh, the clean vocals were thrown in, in just the right spots. His clean voice was quite awesome, certainly a unique voice. That really set the balance of the cd along with the style in which they played. These guys were definitely all over the place but they could pull it off. The mood was on the dark side, which is all good, there was a nice level of diversity.

These guys were awesome.
