UNCOMMON EVOLUTION from Flathead Valley, Montana released their second EP "Junkyard Jesus" after forming in 2013. These are a bunch of young dudes making a fine Doomy racket of sound. There must be something about living out in the more rural areas that helps to produce these earthy, doomy bands. To listen to them, they sound like they are some band that's paid their dues out on the road for years. With the deep vocals and retro sound you'd think they were maybe in their 40's or 50's. It's kind of cool that these young bands can get this kind of sound.
 
The track "Junkyard Jesus" opens the EP with a freedback riff and grooving, doomy style. Deep distorted vocals growl away and the Classic Rock guitars peel off in a 70's Rock flavor. This is reminiscent of another cool US band, MOONBOW. The track slows into a groovy conclusion before suddenly tailing off in to a thrash-out at the end. "Highly Modified Son of a Bitch" is about the black sheep of the family; some bad dude. The guitars blaze away in a Psych/Doom frenzy. This is good stuff and definitely close to CLUTCH in quality. "Feather Short of Flight" is a more grind riff and choppy sounding number with a bit of Punky rhythm. The guitars meander like Tony Lommi from somewhere in the 1970's. The end section is another thrash-out, then a doomy breakdown before slowly riffing to a conclusion. My favorite track is "King of the Heap". This is a slower starting distorted number. The riff is excellent and then the drums speed up and the vocals are a Doomy Rap. The song concludes in a super heavy riff- fest. The sludgy sound is well produced and hits all the right doomy notes.
 
Good stuff flows here and there is a lot of potential in UNCOMMON EVOLUTION. However, they may need to vary their songwriting for a full blown album. They could follow the example of  MOONBOW who add a bit of Folk or CLUTCH who add in a bit more catchy Indie edge.
