On the List
Turkey Vulture
In the 70s, one writer of a famous magazine wrote many nasty words about “Black Sabbath”, on the 80s “Apocalyptic Raids” dealt with extremely bad reviews. Both releases have such feature: hated by writers in their times, but became classics in their times and on the future. Such experience must be an advisement for the writers: be careful with your own musical conceptions to not be remember as mediocre person without a insight of what is to come in the future. And maybe it’s what one must do when dealing with TURKEY VULTURE’s “On the List”.
It’s not a sin to say that this North American duet plays a form of Doom Rock/Sludge Metal filled with different musical elements, as a mix of the genres named above with Country Rock, Punk Rock, Acid Rock and many more. It’s really different from the usual, and it can sound a bit avant-garde Rock for many (elegant words to say weird), but’s not bad at all after the first listen. Songs 1 to 5 were recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tom Boudreau at Bonehead Studio, and 6 was recorded and mixed by Steve Rodgers at Tiny Bunker Studio in Hamden, and mastered by Tom Boudreau (Steve even played as guest guitar, banjo, accordion, and additional percussion), all to create a organic and ‘real’ sound quality, where everything can be heard and understood without problems.
The experimental/different ways shown on “Fiends Like Us” (a short and almost Punk Rock song based on very good guitars), “Untitled”, “Dollhouse” (pay attention on the contrasts between growls and clean vocals), “Adults Destroy” (things shift from a moment to the other without warning), “Harvest Moon”, and “Jill the Ripper” can astonish many, but as told above: on the second time on this EP, things become easier to understand, so try it many times. It’s possible that TURKEY VULTURE is opening a new chapter on Rock/Metal history, so deal with “On the List” with care, and enjoy it.
