Trog - Trog album cover

Acts as CARCASS, EXHUMED, IMPETIGO brought into Death Metal a very good dose of black comedy (or black humor, as you wish) into Death Metal, because the lyrics dealing with disgusting themes (a great part of it, in reality, comes from cheap horror films) fits on the genre. But some acts deal with things in a way that can seem extremely hilarious, as the North American quartet TROG, as can be heard on "Trog", their latest EP.

On the songs, the same old and good mix of North American Death Metal with Grindcore influences, sometimes being fast and brutal, on others slow and with tons of weight that can crush bones to dust. But even with not trying to do some revolutionary change in the genre (in other words, they're not trying do something new), they show personality and energy, and the songs are full of old (and good) musical clichés and usual hooks of the genre, but always with personality. They're not trying to copy anyone, and this EP is really worthy of being heard fully! Engineered, mixed, and mastered by the hands of Hudson Barth (the band's drummer), the sonority is really brutal and classic in many points, but always having in mind that things must be understood but the fans. One can easily understand what's being expressed without problems, but beware of the ears!

"Horrific Irrational Dream Imagery" is a brutal as fast song with many good rhythmic changes, showing the strong and solid playing of bass guitar and drums (and even some Death/Thrash Metal influences can be heard). "The Mangler" is a classical Death Metal song, following the same trend of the previous one, but with many sharp hooks presented by the guitars, and "Cosmic Parasite" follows the same tendency, with good low grunts filling the spaces. And "Of Vomit Reborn" uses a slow set of tempos in many parts, creating oppressive moments that contrast with some faster parts.

TROG really presents a good work on "Trog". And the funny moments lay on the band's pic (take a look, if you can), but their music must be taken seriously!
