TREND KILL GHOSTS is a Brazilian band formed in 2018. Focusing on a combination of Heavy and Power Metal, they blend into a sound that is both familiar and new. "Until The Sun Rises Again" is their second full-length album. Released independently on November 18, 2021, this is a bold effort that sees some spectacular guest appearances, including Elisa Martin, Marina La Torraca and Roland Grapow.
This record opens with a short intro piece. "Marching To the Light" is an anthemic start, building from ethereal keys and chants to a bigger piece involving strings and epic vocalizations from a choir. It continues to grow and swell until the climax. Then "Puppets of Faith" crashes into your ears. With a massive riff and some killer solo guitar work over that, the song is immediately caught in your mind. The bass lead early on proves they have the chops to call themselves Power Metal!
Next, we get "Rebellion," a song with a really heavy riff. That tone and the tuning are exquisite. The vocals soar, the guitars shred, the keys lurk under the riff, but the rhythm here is what works so well. The bass is used more as a rhythm guitar than timekeeper. The drums are fast, frenetic, and just plain fun to hear. That double bass kick is so consistent and really solid. It's almost hard to shift focus to the vocals because the music behind is so good.
Now, let's talk guests. "When The Sun Rise Again" features Elisa C. Martin, a Spanish singer who has worked with numerous bands and now is a vocal coach. Her soaring, almost operatic tones are a thing of beauty. They blend with Diogo in a fantastic harmony. Then there is the guitar and bass work. From the riffs to the solos, they fill the space around the vocals perfectly. This is a killer song that is more than worthy of being called Power Metal.
"Prisoners Of Our Minds" features the inimitable Roland Grapow of HELLOWEEN and MASTERPLAN fame. The guitar tones in this song are a work of art. The riff and rhythm are such a magnificent pairing. The powerful, higher end vocals Diogo uses here are next level. Musically, this is the go-to song on this record for me. That guitar solo is primo fret work. Guitarists need to study this song as a how to play power metal class.
Finally, there is "Poisoned Soul," a killer song featuring one of my favorite vocalists, Marina La Torraca, of PHANTOM ELITE and EXIT EDEN. Her voice is just so... stunning. The way she harmonizes in this tune is amazing. Whether the male vocals are clean or gritty, she is there, giving a counterpoint that is just right. Again, the music behind the vocals is excellent, but I have a hard time hearing it when Marina hits those notes. If you couldn't already tell, this is my favorite track on the record.
The record concludes with another absolute banger. "Mirror Mirror" has a heavy riff and some nice keyboard work underneath, adding Bob Daisley style tones to the mix. I love when Heavy and Power Metal use keys this way. That eerie, haunting tone under the riff just makes me happy.
TREND KILL GHOSTS are a killer new band and I hope they are already working on plans for their next album and a tour. I really like the way they write and play the music. They obviously think about it. They don't slap a bunch of tunes together and call it a day. The compositions, the tones, the textures, it all feels like something you return to over and over because it sounds right. The record is coherent, it flows well from one song into another. This is complete record, start to finish, and worth listening to on loop to make sure you get everything it has to offer.
