Ok ladies and gentleman, the band is TRANSONIC SCIENCE and they come from Cologne, Germany releasing their third work Psychobulb after almost 20 years from their previous work Bulldoze Blues from 2007. It is rare to see bands reuniting after a long period like this (except KISS, SABBATH, etc…). After listening to the first tune of this album “Fear Of God” I have to confess that it did not impress me much. A basic rock with some extra crunch but nothing more than this. Things start to change on the second tune “Stereo One” that shows a different proposal with a much more stoner approach on the riffs. The thing that came to my mind is the unique voice of the singer Ergün Aktürk. It is a strange but powerful output that reminded me of REDFANG by their guitar player Bryan Gilles. when is his turn to sing A good riff starts “Kain & Abel” that also shows the vocalist range singing the song in 2 different voices, clean and dirty.
The songs sound a lot like stoner metal than anything else with very heavy guitars by Markus Bongardt but no solos so far. We come back to a more simple kind of heavy with “Cherooke Smith”. Basic riffs with a lot of fuzz pedals added to the mix and just because I said it, this one has a guitar solo. We reach half way with “Scarscrapper” that starts with a nice bass riff from bass player Manuel Estrada that has the least German name from the band. Again, good song, kind of creative but with no hooks whatsoever making it not memorable as the previous ones. The voice may be a little hidden in the mix as well. We got a little more energy on “Wildest Frame” that is a little faster but still without the sparkle necessary. The songs are kind of too basic and are missing some catchy riffs. The interesting ideas are there like in “Dusty” that is my favorite of the album so far. This is an interlude of softer melodic and rispy vocal melody that goes heavy when the guitars go heavy as well and the arrangement is a little more interesting despite the constant repetition on the riff. Another fuzz filled tune is “Satellite Blues” that is another one to my liking. This one definitely reminds me of RED FANG and is another one that had my seal of approval. Not that this matters much.
TRANSONIC SCIENCE has also a good drummer in Peter Begerow that does not compromise. We end our journey with a softer tune and with clean guitars in ‘Jaycoon” that has good vibes but once again is too basic in its formula. Good effort from the guys from Cologne. I believe they are on a good path to discover their sound despite the long years without being active. Perhaps this long interval may have hindered their creativity a little.
