Timechild - Blossom & Plague album cover

From their EPK, "The vision with this record is to show how heavy rock can continue to challenge and surprise in 2023. The band's heavy and dynamic sound and lyrics has taken a turn in a more progressive and dark direction on this record. Although the foundations of the band's sound are clearly laid by the giants of the past, inspiration is drawn both across time and across genres. Precisely this opportunity to delve into the past several decades of music history and through this define their own sound has been an important part of the songwriting and recording process." The album has eight songs.

"The Dying Tide (Part 1)" is first. A brief cool wind ushers in smooth acoustic guitars, and it segues into part two. A calm riff leads to some great vocal harmonies. The song is short, but the refined sound comes through. "The Dying Tide (Part 3)" has a hastier pace and is slightly darker in scope. The key to the band's sound seems to be these great vocal harmonies. Some power also comes through in this song. "Call of the Petrichor" laments with both sadness and anger. Four tracks into the album, and the style still evades me a bit. I suppose you could call this Progressive Rock music, but it is mostly dark rock in my opinion.

"Hands of Time" has a little more punch to it. But unfortunately, the constant dark tones and mid-tempo pace of many of the songs makes it difficult to really get off the ground. "Buried in Autumn" is another song buried in laments and darkness. I feel these sounds work better with harsh music, rather than melodic music. The band is not without talent, but these overly sad songs are just not making an impact. "The Sign" has some nice bass guitar notes, but again, the laments are the primary sound on the album. "Only our Shadows Remain" closes the album. It's fully engaged in sadness, and regret.

I think if you are going to commit to a dark sound, commit fully. In the case of this album, it lingers somewhere between the world of the living and the dead, and because there are not any harsh vocals to really push this sound, it just falls flat for me. The vocal harmonies are the best part of the album. The rest, just a mediocre and forgettable affair for me.
