Thetan - Laughed At By The Gods album cover

THETAN is a Hardcore Drum and Bass act from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2011.  I believe this is their fourth full-length album, and it contains thirteen tracks, clocking in at just over thirteen minutes in total.  This is loud, fast, raucous Punk music with a flair for the depressed.  Lyrically, the band deals with issues of war, the foster care system, the struggle with oneself,  and other social issues, noting our countries' shortfalls and our part in this world in aggressive, shouted bursts.

"The Grand Denouncement" is a noteworthy track, with the only lyric line being "Dear self- appointed border guard, your citizenship is up for debate." This echoes in the music as well. Punk music has always been about societal injustice, religious hypocrisy and other topics, and THETAN is no exception. A lot of their songs however are just void of any discernable rhythm or melody, and all that stands is the unadulterated anger, as in the flurry we hear in the track "Medicine in the Water." Feedback hits here and there, like daggers over the landscape of their message. It is difficult to make a comparison here with some of the larger, more known Punk bands throughout time. It isn't as structured as the DEAD KENNEDYS, or as free flowing and dark as BLACK FLAG. It is a much more guttural and despondent sound, like the sound heard in the track "Collateral Damage."

The final track is the only song anywhere near three minutes, and has a morphing of Black Metal into the sound, if it were not for the message, "When in Rome, Go Fuck Thyself." Lyrically, they have done a fine job, but musically, there just isn't enough meat to be able to label this well. In any case, I am unsure as to the market for this kind of sound, other than the live element where fans can feed off the brutal energy and "stick it to the man" sort of approach.
