An Italian fourpiece, THE WHIRLINGS where constructed in L'Aquila back in 2008 Their sound centers around the all to common Stoner and Heavy Psych vibe with some instrumental Post-Rock tossed in for good measure. Or so it seems from the surface. The substance of actuality here is definitely much, much more. Their new album, "Earthshine" is available now in all formats via the band and Subsound Records on Bandcamp.

The band indicates that the songs making up "Earthshine" evolved from the band's live shows. Themes of live drawn out jams, carefully and meticulously expanded upon and birthed anew by really delving deep into the instrumental Post-Rock aspect of their sound. With that said, the opening track, "Vacuum" might confuse a bit as it features a muffled, distorted yet intoxicating subtle vocal from fellow L'Aquilla resident, Vera Claps. It's a haunting beginning, that proves unique for it's vocal dissension, as the next track, "Reverance" shatters the shroud of mystery with what sounds like a clattering of chains, and a light, slow bluesy build that screams Heavy Psych.

"#6" was the song that completely won me over though. Intense, brooding and oppressive. This is the type of heavy handed riff jam that usually evolves effortlessly between talented musicians as a bridge between other songs. It's perfect. "Good For Health, Bad For Education" even takes on a bit of Martin Gore guitar feel to it, which was completely unexpected, but again, perfect. The bass and drum build midway screams a FLOYD; WATERS/MASON vibe and as it blends and morphs with the former it's impressive indeed. Together the two tracks occupy about 14 minutes of euphoric explorations. Both definite highlights.

Closing things out is "Lost In Without", which while mired in a bit of repetitiveness, still reinforces what a great sounding release this is. Bass and drums are equally prominent in the mix as are the guitars, with every musician given a level playing field with a shared opportunity to excel. I really, really enjoyed this one. Subtle Heavy Psych anchored in Post Rock. Definitely a band to watch.
