The Scum - Dead Eyes album cover

For what might be the shortest assignment I will ever receive to review, I will discuss the EP "Dead Eyes" released by THE SCUM on May 1, 2020. THE SCUM is a Colombian death metal band that formed back in 2013, though between the years of 2013 and 2017, they were known simply as SCUM. Since then, they released their debut EP "Self-Destructive Race" in 2015 and a full-length album "Ashen" in 2018.

"Dead Eyes" is only two tracks at slightly over eight and a half minutes long. On these two tracks, the style heard is old school death metal. The riffs are simple but easy to bang your head to. The guitars have a great low and rough tone. Drumming is a constant fast battering in the background, though sometimes slowing down to echo the changes in riffs and vocals in different parts of each song. To me, the only negative for the EP is the production. While I think raw production suits this style of death metal, the drums could be mixed with better tone and weight.

The titular first track "Dead Eyes" kicks in energetically and doesn't let up, even at the end. Two quick but kick ass solos break up the track. Dave Ingram of the British death metal band BENEDICTION makes a guest appearance. "The Scum - No Forgiveness" is even more fast-paced than "Dead Eyes." Combined with the riffs and rhythmic vocals, you can't help but head bang along.

Honestly, at less than nine minutes long, I highly suggest you listen to this album. It's short but a whole lot of fun. Check it out for yourself and listen to the infectious riffs!
