Under the Cruel Glow of Terror
The Projectionist
There are many times when hearing a band can cause the listener the idea of 'why in the blazes does such band not working as it could?', for there are many things that aren't fitting as they could to improve things. This is the right idea of what happens when hearing "Under the Cruel Glow of Terror", the new album from Canadian band THE PROJECTIONIST. They're a good Old School Black Metal band that has an appeal similar to those that used the ancient formula for the genre that allows some nasty melodies to come into their music. It's not complicated or even simplistic, but it seems that they want to embrace the entire world sometimes, to use some musical experiments that could be left out of their music. It's not a loss, but if they really want to use such noisy elements, use them properly, please.
The biggest problem of the album resides on its sonority. The crude and noisy approach used on the sound quality of "Under the Cruel Glow of Terror" turns things hard to understand in some moments, and the instrumental tunes are far from what their music needs. Musically, there are very good ideas expressed on "Pythagorean Deadlocked" (very good guitars and drums, but the instrumental tunes seem like they were recorded on a room without any care), "Tragedy of Jars" (the contrasts between shrieks, low tunes and agonizing snarls are a good idea, but the sound quality isn't helping) and on "All Grace Expunged from Living", but all of them need to be worked and bound together in a better way. Their music is good, but needs to mature.
The sad part of this review is that THE PROJECTIONIST isn't a beginner, but a band with five years of existence on their shoulders. "Under the Cruel Glow of Terror" could be an amazing album, but this lack of a direction and the sound quality messed things completely.
