He Dreams Of Lions
The Heavy Eyes

Well, I was listening to this album on my way to the hospital with my pregnant girlfriend. I needed something to lift my spirits because we were worried about some possible problems we had. This made up for it big time.
Tony Iommi once said that the root of Metal is Blues Rock and Heavy Blues from the 60's. THE HEAVY EYES took this to heart and really dived into the skin and bones of the genre. They combined alot of styles and have made one hell of an album.
Throughout the album you hear a lot of distortion in the guitars and that reminded me a lot of ''My My Hey Hey'' by Neil Young. It was that type of guitar sound. I thoroughly enjoyed it and added some depth to a number of the songs on the album.
The production is quite good, it's pretty stripped down and every instrument sounds like a ton of bricks! Don't worry people, that's a French Canadian Expression we have! Even the tambourine in the last song (I think it's the last song) sounds tremendous.
They take away a little bit here and there from bands and make a sound of their own. Some songs may sound like old school Stoner Rock but sometimes they go in a different path and it may sound like THE WHITE STRIPES. They don't stick to one specific genre; all songs have their different vibe and energy.
This is their third album and I would really like to listen to those previous albums to notice the progression in their music and that's something I want to do in the not so distant future because I thoroughly enjoyed their music.
The vocal does not really stand out but does a good job on each song, he pours his heart out on the songs and that is typical of Blues Rock in general. He holds nothing back and his voice meshes very well with the style of music.
The only drawback from the whole album is the really repetitive choruses, especially on ''Old Saltillo Road'' and ''Hail to the King Baby'', the non top repeating of one sentence throughout the chorus got on my nerves really quickly. It hurts the overall quality of the songs because it's so damn repetitive. The rest of the song is great but when you get to those choruses, you feel like wanting to skip and go to the other song. That is really the only drawback I saw on the whole album.
If you love bands like THE BLACK CROWES, THE WHITE STRIPES, THE KILLS and some early BLACK KEYS, this is the album for you. One of the best albums of the year and something off the wall and completely different of what I am used to review!
