The history of THE EVERSCATHED goes way back to 1996, and they were known as ENMORTEM. It was after three Demos and one EP they have put their mind to record a full length album named "Razors Of Unrest". Yet before the release of this album, they have decided to change their name to THE OVERSCATHED. "Scars To Bare" is this group's 3rd full length album.
Even though being very similar to many other Death bands, in the essence of fast pounding drums and slamming guitars, there is one aspect in which THE EVERSCATHED are very different - for once in a long time I was able to understand the lyrics growled by the vocalist. This shows on incredible diction and vocal skills not seen by many vocalists, and I must say I admire it, although I do not enjoy the singing one bit.
The second song, "Hammers At Dawn" has a very good guitar riff, which is very appropriately to the genre overcasted by hard distortion and drums. Yet if you listen very carefully underneath all those, you can find a very creative guitar player. "Maim The Wandering" on the other hand, has a clean melodic beginning that allows the listener to appreciate the work of this guitar player.
Those guys are standing on the annoying thin line between the pure Death metal to the Melodic Death. It is mostly annoying because they have many good riffs and melodies even people like me, who do not enjoy Death, could relate to. Being so obligated to the Death lines, all those beautiful riffs are being buried underneath a giant pile of distortion and heavy drums. Thanks to those distortion and drums it is impossible for me to listen closely to the clean guitar and what sounds like some very good growls. It is only at the clean parts I could absolutely value the true qualities of this amazing band. For you I have to say, if you like your Death Metal tilting just a tiny little bit to the Melodic Metal, this would be a great album for you.
