An Age Undreamed Of…

The Cimmerian

This album was as much of a story as it was music, and the factored the themes mentioned above into their compositions. Their recipe of Doom, Sludge, Death and Black Metal results in a stew that is dark, thick, hearty, and even a little bitter.

From Bandcamp, “Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, , this three-piece rogue set tells the tales of high adventure and what is best in life with an aggressive mix of sludgy based rumblings, caustic fuzz filled riffs, and sonorous war drumming. Follow us for it is Crom's will and if you don't, then to hell with you. The rumbling heard overhead is not a thunder but is in fact the Warhammer dropping their first full -length album "An Age Undreamed Of..." The band's familiar doom thrash stylings bring the listener into the world of the esoteric and mystic as well as documenting the Lore of sword wielding heroes of the past and of the fantastical.”

The album has eight songs, and “Shadow Kingdom” is first, and it’s a short introduction to the album. Heavy, distorted tones begin the song, with drum beats in tow, and it sounds somber and weighted. “Neckbreaker of the Mountain” is another slow and powerful song, and the pacing allows the aggressiveness to come through in spades. The pacing picks up at times, but the power remains strong. “Silver and Gold” features meaty bass notes which just further the black filth of their music. The riffing is simple, a la BLACK SABBATH, but if done right, you don’t need a plethora of chords to get your point across. “Darkwolf” hears the juggernaut continue to plow forward, knocking over every barricade in their path.  The raspy harsh vocals also add to the filth and aggression of the album,

“Mournblade” brings a little more Doom with it to the table. The aggressiveness of Black Metal is still there, but adding Doom into the mix effectively combines two genres together. There is even some punk elements here, reminiscent of MOTORHEAD. “Deathstalker” is just as it sounds. A massive and gnarled beast emerges, and he stalks his prey slowly and deliberately, and once he has your scent, he won’t quit his pursuit until you are dead. The lengthy “Monarch” closes the album, and it really gives the band a chance to close with crushing beats. The pacing varies from slow and lumbering to fast and contentious. The sound drops near the half way mark, and then the band shifts into overdrive.

Overall, this album was as much of a story as it was music, and the factored the themes mentioned above into their compositions. Their recipe of Doom, Sludge, Death and Black Metal results in a stew that is dark, thick, hearty, and even a little bitter.
