Lost And Found
The Byron Band
•
August 2, 2004
This double CD, featuring extremely rare material from David Byron's solo career, was originally released by long-time associate and friend Robin George - the guitarist of Byron Band - on his own label in August 2003. Only from Robin George's website had someone the opportunity to purchase this specific release so far. At last, this great set of previously unreleased studio and live recordings from 1980 to 1982 has been re-released by Majestic Rock Records.
While David Byron will forever be known as the charismatic frontman for mighty legends Uriah Heep at their MK I height of their career, his solo effort didn't fall short of the truth that his unique vocal abilities could "push tons upwards any musical composition. At first forming Rough Diamond and releasing their self-titled album - "Rough Diamond (1977) - he put together The Byron Band with young guitarist Robin George. Their first album - "On The Rocks (1981) - mixes a blend of Hard Rock and Blues, making it essential to the average listener. Unfortunately, this recording was destined to be the band's sole one.
This set is a collection of live recordings, rehearsals and demos, including many songs intended for a second studio album that never happened, since Robin's solo career took off and Byron's health got worse. In addition, some live Heep classics are included plus a magnificent Robin George composition ("Angelsong). Disc-One starts with full band demos from 1982, including Bad Girl (previously included on the band's first LP). Following is a bunch of songs done at David's house - with just himself and Robin - with only a chorus and verse here and there and some chatter between them two.
A pleasant surprise for any devoted Byron disciple... Disc-Two consists of a 1981 band rehearsal and a live performance from Liverpool in 1980. The sound is relatively pretty good and featured are 6 songs, some from the "On The Rocks LP. On the other hand the Liverpool gig will fullfill Heep fans with a smile of contentment! Included are 8 songs (few from the "On The Rocks album) with two Heep tunes - July Morning and Sweet Lorraine in a prominent position. While the band stayed true to the original arrangement of July Morning, it is Sweet Lorraine that is surprising, with the saxophone more "in-the-front. The tracklist closes with Angel Song, a lighter track by Robin George from 1985, (I want to consider as) a tribute to David.
Summary... Whether someone is starting now to build his own "relationship with Uriah Heep and (or) David Byron himself or is long "lost into Heep's and (or) Byron's magical "garden of Eden, this release belongs in the collection of any fan of both, of Robin George or of classic 70s Rock in general. Case closed...
