The Biscuit Merchant - Phobia album cover

From Bandcamp, "THE BISCUIT MERCHANT is a true solo metal project. There's a real melting pot of genres on display...Thrashy, slightly Proggy, and with plenty of Death Metal influence to go around." The latest album here has eight songs, and "Dematerialize" is the first. Heavy Thrash influences come through first, followed by some Proggy elements in terms of the meter shifting. Clean vocals combine with harsh ones in the chorus. Although some of the riffs are a bit outdated, Justin performs them with confidence. "Frail Sister" has a bossy opening riff with some audible bass notes. I hear some Punk influences in this song, or something like THE OFFSPRING, although the harsh vocals are brutal. The guitar solo shows off his muscular side, and I like the slow down towards the end.

"Trauma Collective" is eight minutes long, and begins with a heavy, slow, and prodding riff, along with deep gutturals. Again, some of the riffs are outdated, but he does offer a variety of them. "Distress Signal" is another song with a very heavy bottom end. The clean vocals that follow are a stark contrast to the opening sound, and the album is headed into some uncharted territory. "Superior Shores" begins with clean guitars and the main riff offers a good deal more melody than previous songs. The lead guitar parts will sing to you, and let them do so. Justin also unleashes the beast in some of the runs. They are phenomenal.

"Invocation" is a slower grind, but with some guitar harmonies to go along with the deadly guttural vocals. "In Timore Dei" closes the album. It means "The fear of God." Following a slow opening, the fire spreads quickly, with a weighted and aggressive riff. Thick bass notes rear their head as well. There is also a bit of meandering towards the end. Overall, you gotta love Justin's dedication to his craft, and his musicianship is excellent. I love his experimentation however...solo artists can do that. Unfortunately, many of the riffs were just outdated and tired sounding, and the album lacked a core identity.
