Black Madonna
The Austerity Program

I always like to hear new stuff. I like to expand my horizons and come across new bands from all genres of Metal. But, sometimes my will to listen to new stuff and get to know new bands is a torture. It happened to most of us sometimes in the past. THE AUSTERITY PROGRAM is a new project of Calabrese and Foley; released their first album during 2007, I was selected to listen to their debut.
The bio at their official site says that the project is two people from New York City and their drum machine. Thad Calabrese plays bass and Justin Foley sings and plays guitar. Neither have taken any instructional courses on playing their instruments. Not even a how-to video. They started playing while attending college in New York City. Not much more to say about those two guys.
I did a small research in the Internet since the album was out some months ago, to see what the feedback from the Press was. After listening to the album for several times, and reading again and again the reviews, the conclusion was that either this album is awful - but only me and a friend of mine know it - or it is a masterpiece and I'm too stupid to understand its magnificence. To tell you the truth, the only thing that this album gave me was headache! Two guys that think they play music and a drum machine. I always say that it is nice not to be able to categorize a band. This applies to those guys, but only for the 'no category' part. You may listen to some reference to BIG BLACK, JESUS LIZARD or SHELLAC. If you like those bands, you may like Black Madonna. The only good thing I can think of for this debut album is the production and the sound. I have to admit that they did a really good job in those sections.
Black Madonna is definitely an album that I would not buy. To tell you the truth, I won't even listen to it again. I don't know if this is a masterpiece that I am unable to understand, or that only two people that listen to this release realized that this not not a good debut, but since I'm the one doing this review...
