Thaw - Earth Ground album cover

The latest offering from THAW is an eclectic mix of what THAW themselves describe as "experimental noise". Upon a first listen it is quiet clear that the description THAW make of them is quite accurate. Driving drumbeats, heavy guitar riffs, and guttural vocals make this a fairly "typical" metal album on the surface. But listen more closely and you will hear electronic and synth elements that add another whole dynamic to the album. Intermixing the two definitely makes for an eclectic mix of "experimental noise" that THAW are proud to call their own personal sound.

Tracks such as "SECOND DAY" and "NO LIGHT" begin with massive guitar riffs and driving drumbeats, which are joined in my deep, growling as is typical in some genres of metal. Listen more closely, however, to tracks such as "SUN" or "AFTERKINGDOM" and you will notice the electronic and synthetic elements that are added into THAW's sound. This combination makes for an interesting, experimental sound the few bands have experimented with before.

It is made abundantly clear on this release that THAW are not afraid to try new things. They are not afraid to put different elements of music together to get a new sound that is uniquely their own. In fact, THAW seems pretty proud to create a new style of music that is known or achieved by few other bands in the genre. Overall, the sound works quiet well. It gives the listener something that is not heard in most other "metal" bands that ascribe to more traditional styles of metal. Listeners are always looking for something unique, and the "experimental noise" of THAW definitely offers that unique element of music to the listener if they are looking for it. Take a listen and enjoy something unique added into the mainstream of underground heavy metal for yourself.<
