Terra Builder - Solar Temple album cover

Little is known about TERRA BUILDER hailing from the Northwest in Germany. They were formed in 2022 and they are a Deathgrind band. After releasing one demo last year, they now released their debut album via Indian Black, Death, and Doom Metal specialists Transcending Obscurity Records. "Solar Temple" has a length of about 33 minutes. Conceptually, "Solar Temple" takes the listener into extra-terrestrial space. The opener "End Of Orbit" starts strongly with thunderous guitar riffing at a measured tempo. It does not take long until the switch to a track of blistering pace, blast-beats, and screams from the abyss. The growling vocals are versatile and are either at the low or medium end of the guttural range. The riffing is direct and simple. Highlight of the opener is the cool lead guitar solo that gives the track direction and structure.

"Interplanetary Portal" continues with the Deathgrind carnage, where the verse parts are at mid-tempo, while the chorus parts are blast-beat driven at high pace. The vocals are relatively monotone being at the medium end of the guttural range without any tonal shifts, which fits perfectly to the track, as also the riffing does not include any shifts. "Constant Cosmic Failure" has a grim start at a slow tempo transitioning into a verse part at frantic pace. The riffing is very aggressive and so are the vocals. The drumming includes, beside the blast-beats, a lot of double-bass drumming in particular during the break for the lead guitar solo. The lead guitar solo gives the relatively simple track an extra dimension.

"Abyss" starts with direct and powerful riffing at mid-tempo. Despite the occasional blast-beat outbursts, "Abyss" maintains its mid-tempo shape with a few subtle twists in tempo. The melodic framework has two aspects: there are a few oriental vibes and during the final part, the melodies become melancholic and epic. In so far, "Abyss" is a welcomed change as the focus is on the melodies. The title song starts with crushing basslines added to the powerful riffs. "Solar Temple" is a bit in Deathcore mode, most often at down-tempo with frequent abrupt twists to crazy speed driven by blast-beat thunderstorms. The riffing and the melodies are blood-freezing. During the break, the lead guitar parts contribute very well to the song. "Dead Celestial" has a frantic start with a blast-beat attack, the tight riffing, and the screams. There are twists in tempo and rhythm and during the mid-tempo part; and there are vocal shifts towards low growls. "Dead Celestial" is a very intense song in terms of aggression, and it is one of the best songs of the album.

"Total Overcome" has a very powerful start with dark riffing and lots of double-bass drumming at a measured tempo. It is a track with spine-chilling melodies, at times a bit melancholic and doom-laden, the latter one especially during the lead guitar solo. While the verse and chorus parts have a simple structure, there is some high-speed chaos introduced during the break. "Total Overcome" has been uploaded on YouTube as a teaser by the label. "Carbon Based Misery" starts frantic with the blast-beats and sharp riffing during the verse parts, while there is a twist towards measured tempo for the chorus parts. It is a constant back and forth between those both extremes whereas the double-bass drumming drive the slow parts. The melodies are spine-chilling throughout, in particular towards the end of the track driven by the lead guitars. The album finishes with "Cryogenic Sleep" and it is a chaotic finale of blast-beat assaults, screams, and aggressive riffing. It perfectly fits in to the album sound and it includes another lead guitar solo giving the track an extra dimension.

TERRA BUILDER release a decent debut album. The sound is brutal and brachial like a battering ram. It is a mixture of devastating riffs, a combination of blast-beat thunderstorms and double-bass attacks, and vocals coming straight out of hell. The lead guitars give the songs something extra and could have been utilized a bit more often. The songwriting still needs a bit maturity to add some versatility to the sound. The album is well produced. "Solar Temple" is a promising debut of a young band and time will tell how well TERRA BUILDER establish themselves in the Deathgrind scene.
