Even though I wrote my first review some years ago, there are times that I still find myself doing the same mistake: reading the whole info sheet. Believe me, many times this is guiding you to the wrong direction. Same thing happened with the debut album of SYSTEM DIVINE, "The Conscious Sedatio".
This project (?) formed just two years ago, in 2008, with members from ABORDED (Sven De Caluwé and bassist Cole Martinez here playing the guitar), coming for Israel's DISTORDED (Miri Milman) and other bands. "The Conscious Sedatio" is their first full-length album. An antedate EP was released in 2009 under the title "The Collapse", with three of its songs being in this full album, too.
So let's begin with the positive points of this album. The production and the mastering is almost perfect from the hands of Cole Martinez and James Murphy. It gives the album a heavy sound and this is something that every band tries to play in a hybrid of Hardcore - Death Metal (as far as the rhythm section and some vocals concerns) with melodic parts and female vocals. I think it would be right to mention some nice bass lines and the solid rhythm section. Finally there are some nice vocals from both Miri Milman and Sven De Caluwé. The problem is at some points I believe that there are moments in some songs that the vocals are not in the right spot. That has to do with the composition of the songs and "An Intoxicating Affair" is a good example for what I am trying to say here. The other problem is that after a while it is like they repeat themselves. The songs are starting to sound the same to my ears and the riffing with all the keys and samples make some parts of the songs feel like noise.
Bottom line is that "An Intoxicating Affair" is not a bad album but is not passing the average either. There are some good ideas, but that is not enough to make someone to buy an album, is it? Newer Metal fans may find it interesting but the older ones won't even bother to give it a chance.
