Sypsis - Hypnosis album cover

If it wasn't for the Metal Archives info, I would have never identifies SYPSIS from Greece as a Technical Thrash Metal band at first, but it is. Such is the uniqueness and diversity that though there are just 3 songs in this EP, each song offers something new.

With their debut EP, SYPSIS blasts fast paced Thrash, but the Thrash can only be heard only in the 2 of the 3 songs here. 'Hypnosis' starts off with "Asturias", an atmospheric song which builds up the tension as the song goes, it's almost like the song is picked up from a historic battle movie. Part of the genre confusion is due to the first song as it shows nothing that the band has to offer in the main menu which falls in the next 2 songs. "Hypnosis Final" goes on high tempo mode right from the word go and there are beautiful guitar parts both solos and the fast riffs complimenting each other beautifully. While the vocals of George Diamantis is of a typical Thrash vocal style as he screams all throughout his part in the 2 songs, the drum beats are heard in relentless pace and add a nice touch to the band's music. "Dark Illusion Final" is a longer 5:31 min song as it starts off with a combination of bass and guitar solo in low tempo before building the tension and moving into mid tempo after nearly one and half minutes. The song though similar to previous song, has different riffs and the vocals are of less screaming style and rather just more clean vocals and is an interesting Thrash song as a whole. The music has lot to improve in all the departments even though this is a very strong debut record.

While this is a strong debut record by SYPSIS, the only critic I have here is off the "Asturias" as I fail to understand why the band bothered to play an atmospheric song as the first song instead of going for a full on Thrash attack, and frankly I don't buy the whole 'diversity' excuse here as there are just 3 songs. The production is moderate and the music itself is moderate if not too good or too bad. As a whole, the 3 songs are worth checking out for all seasoned Thrash fans as this EP is just over 10 min and there are some good parts here and there.
