Colorful Cows

I've always given extra credit for music that grabs my attention by doing something new. New, for me, means that its either a mosaic of many different elements, or something viciously cool that you don't seem to hear too much of in the mainstream, or even in the mainstream within the margin. While debating on whether this is industrial, experimental, alternative, Electro-Rock, or any other form of Post-Modern avant-garde music, the fact is clear- SYNDROME has the ability to create something that sounds naturally eclectic, and genuinely brave. To me, this is the first point where releases baring the responsibility of trying not fuck - up creating something 'new', should be tested. Truly the fun part is that this first effort by the Israeli band sounds really well.
The music is heavily synth layered, packed with cool fast paced guitar riffs, bad ass drum grooves, keyboard harmonies, and the occasional guitar solo. The vocals resembles different eras of both ANATHEMA and PARADISE LOST, which is either very rewarding if you are a fan of that style, or very irritating if you tend to find this type of singing 'Whinish'. The overall musicianship sounds very mature and thoroughly architected, and the amount of talent these guys have in both writing and performing is very well noticed. It's more than safe to say that "Colorful Cows" nurtures a satisfying sense of fun energy and excels especially in creating a modern atmosphere; One that draws its influence from heavy projects such as those mentioned above, and even from the fresh sounding features of the likes of ENTWINE and ZEROMANCER.
"LQC", "Get My Words", and "Change" are good examples of the bands high abilities to engineer energy and should sound great in live gigs. The rest of the tracks in this short EP are basically just as cool but tend to sound a bit too similar at times. Plus, there's a weird filler that bears the name of the EP, enfolding static noise and weird industrial machine type operating sounds. Infinitely useless as it is, I assume it resonates with the albums general theme - something the band describes as a metaphor to our life and society. Not needless to say, on artists, the ambition to sketch such metaphor should come with the understanding of such responsibilities as well, especially in comparison with other art pieces that do exactly that very well. The catch with being brave while trying to create something new is that you're either bound to fall into the arms of clichés sometimes, or that your brave attempts of creating something eclectic will eventually suck. Luckily, this release is far more solid and well structured to fail at either. This being said, it does seem to get repetitive at times.
This release has the balls to highlight the inherent underlying subtext from the start - Post-Modern creativity and attitude in your face. While they carry all tasks well, I'd say that subtext here is what really matters, and that we're yet to hear more from a more mature SYNDROME, hopefully soon.
