Draw Blood

This wasn’t a bad album per se, but besides the heavy bass notes, it didn’t offer much originality to the genre. In today’s market, that is one thing that bands just have to be able to do…either that or be absolute masters of their trade.

From Bandcamp, “Prepare for the unholy union of darkness and destruction with "Draw Blood,” the latest offering. Let darkness spread, "Draw Blood" will raise the dead. Ten tracks of terror, with a lyrical fist, each one a torment you won’t want to miss. Let the darkness unfold, with Draw Blood, a black metal tale so cold.” The album has ten songs. “Determination” is first, and I love the heavy, meaty bass notes here. Bass is often an instrument that gets lost in the mixing of Black Metal, but here, it has a commanding presence.

“Follow Through” features a Black ‘N Roll type of sound, where Classic Rock and Black Metal intermingle. Again, the bass is excellent, and although some of the riffs are simple, it is an effective song. “Don’t Contain Your Lust” is another shot of energy, and that’s one thing that the band does very well. They don’t just press down the gas pedal however to breakneck speeds and hold it there…instead they use varying pacing along the way. “Erect Your Congregation” however doesn’t really distinguish itself from some of the other songs on the album, and it appears that the band is starting to falter a bit around the half-way point…let’s keep listening.

“Chop, Slit, Flay” has a rocking drum beat as the album takes a turn back to where it began. The bass and drums work perfectly here with one another, but again, the riff and vocals are just a bit trite. “Aluminum Bat Domina” has a steady rocking pace and although the song has a lot of energy, their riff game is beginning to fail a bit, because these are riffs that you have heard before. “Under My Thumb” was originally recorded by THE ROLLING STONES, and I like how the band keeps it as close to the original sound as possible, albeit with Black Metal vocals of course. The music is spot on, however.

We reach the end of the album with “Sin, Offer, Obey,” and it might be the darkest offering on the album, with a slow, lumbering pace. Overall, this wasn’t a bad album per se, but besides the heavy bass notes, it didn’t offer much originality to the genre. In today’s market, that is one thing that bands just have to be able to do…either that or be absolute masters of their trade.
