Pulvis Et Umbra

SURTR is a Heavy Metal band that comes from France, a country I don't usually hear much about when it comes to Metal, apart from GOJIRA and the festival Hellfest, I am not familiar with many bands that come from there. But SURTR comes along to remediate this situation and playing Doom Metal no less, my favorite genre of all...
Their debut album, "World of Doom", was released back in 2011 to a lukewarm reception and now with their sophomore album the general consensus is that they are heading for the right direction, but since I haven't listened to their first record I would have to draw conclusions solely based on this album, and from what I have heard I think this band shows great promise.
I really liked "Pulvis Et Umbra",it is a pretty good Doom record with great bass lines especially in "Three Winters of Wars", which is my favorite song from this album, with its military drumming intro and sound of birds, and it is a pretty epic song. Another thing that caught my attention was Jeff Maurer's vocals that reminded me a lot of MAEL MÓRDHA's lead singer when Maurer is singing normally but what really annoyed me was his tendency of sometimes going to an almost growling type of vocals like on the song "The Cross", this changes are pretty irritating since I am not much of a fan of this type of "singing".
To conclude I would recommend for people that like Doom Metal to check this band out and draw their own conclusion since this seems like a band that people would either love or hate, I really liked it and will start paying more attention to this French power trio.
