Songs From The Ashes

Due to a new friendship I am starting to feel a bigger appreciation for Stoner/Doom Metal; I have gradually been shown they don't need stage gimmicks, fancy costumes or catchy guitar solos to show us what they're all about, they are all about the music alone. Recently a new band reinforced my appreciation for this tactic; they are French born Stoner Metal quintet SUPERTANKER in the form of their debut album appropriately titled "Songs From The Ashes".
This infamous quartet formed in the year 2007 near Paris, the renowned city of romance. After going through a demo release and a couple of line up changes they have a released their first full length album. As it states on their Facebook page; their sound took a natural swing in different directions, one side being incisive Groovy, Power Metal and the other side being Heavy Stoner Metal. Having listened to their debut album in its full glory I can concur that this statement is one hundred percent correct; I also agree that their unique sounds sets them in a promising path through the Metal community.
Now onto this incredibly interesting album which proves to me that SUPERTANKER definitely mean business; no track sounds the same here and I highly admire that, especially when it's coming from a debut album. As you remember from my previous reviews; when a band can show this much variety in their music at the beginning of their career they are more likely to do well in the long run. From the acoustic softness of "Used" to the dark deep Stoner depths provided by "In Fall We Trust" there is a track to suit every mood under the sun.
Their sound heavily reminds me of some Grunge Rock from the nineties that reinforced my passion for Rock as a teenager; I am talking about NIRVANA and PEARL JAM particularly with the vocal work and guitar techniques. Their song "Used" reminds me of personal favourite song "I Live Behind The Clouds" from Psychedelic Rock outfit MONSTER MAGNET.
Concluding dark, despairing track "I Can't Live A Second Life" marks the end of a unblemished record.
With solid drum patterns, flawless guitar techniques and no-nonsense vocal work I think this sets SUPERTANKER up with a concrete package to ensure they succeed in the Metal Community. Considering Stoner Metal is not usually something I would listen to for pleasure purposes I am considering this band as a new favourite of mine because of this excellent, thought provoking masterpiece.
