German five piece SUPERNOVA PLASMAJETS have been in existence since 2010, so they have been banging out music together for seven years. It shows in their style, they sound like a coherent, tight band. Their eponymously titled album is their debut; clearly a lot of work has gone into it and they certainly look like a band with attitude, so I was looking forward to hearing the music.
Opener "Leave Forever" flies straight into a punchy, pacey, poppy tempo. On first listen, I wouldn't necessarily say this is a rock song, but I don't like to pigeonhole music. "Supernova Team" has a strong riff and some good percussive work. I think this is a track that will go down well on a sticky dancefloor on a Saturday night.
I listened to third track, "Hold You Close" several times. With a rather lovely piano intro and some beautiful vocals, it trips into ballad territory. Fear not, the music builds for a big chorus before falling back to simplicity once more. "Turn Off The Lights" has a dirtier feel to it, although it's somewhat of a bratty track, flipping off convention and your expectation as to what you might have expected it to sound like.
"Will I Ever Know" starts off with some sterling bass work and segues into a somewhat old fashioned riff. This song reminded me so much of something, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. It wasn't my favourite track on the album, but still a passable listen. "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now" continued in the same vein, with some obligatory "Whoah-oh-oh-oh-ohs" and some admirable guitar and vocal effects.
Anything with a cowbell intro gets my vote, so of course I have to say that I loved the next track, "Hangin' On My Lips", but I would have liked more cowbell, obviously, despite the proliferation of that much underrated instrument during the chorus. "Faster" started off with some great riffs and some pinch harmonics (who doesn't love a good pinch harmonic or two?) and may have even induced a bit of dancing around the room. It's clearly going to be an anthem.
On the home straight, "Fallin' Backwards" is a poppy little number with some great riffs and attitude and a great, nippy pace about it. Penultimate track "Feel Your Fear" is a chirpy effort, a pop-tastic track with some nice guitar work three quarters of the way through. Final song, "Turn Around" continues in the same way and ends the album in the way in which it started, with a poppy, upbeat, positive vibe.
Guitar riffs - check. Super cool drums and rhythm section - check. Vocals - check. Jennifer has a fantastic voice, but in my humble opinion, on some tracks it sounds somewhat poppy with the vocals tending towards being a little overproduced. There are some great female vocalists out there at the moment, such as Danni Monroe (The Dirty Youth) and Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) and Jennifer certainly has the potential to be up there with them, but I would like to see less pop and more dirt and grind if this band are going to elevate themselves above the dross.
Overall, this will probably do a great turn on commercial radio and TV and it's always a brave move to bang out a full length album when so many other bands are putting out EP after EP. I would very much like to see SUPERNOVA PLASMAJETS live to see how their songs translate and really just to hear that belter of a voice up close and personal.
