Calculations Of The Ancients
Super Massive Black Holes

I must admit that the maketing descriptive text and the introductory manifesto concerning this new Canadian project/Band had a great effect on my mind. It was exciting and I was, in a blink of an eye, captivated by the promising high profile concept and interested in giving a listen to this "Calculations of the Ancients". Indeed it reads "Intriguing, thought-provoking and memorable, SUPER MASSIVE BLACK HOLES (aka SMBH) plays a mix of genres that will make you scratch your head and tap your foot, all while banging your head into solid objects. Seamlessly blending Death Metal, Rock, Jazz-Fusion, Prog, Blues, and "Other", SMBH will expand your mind and prove that new and interesting music is alive and well..."
Unfortunately after some spins it's clearly a big letdown. Not only is the sound quite amateurish, but the music itself isn't catchy nor does it provide any seducing hooks. It's a nonsense amalgamation of grunts with some regular unsynchronized riffs, nothing really innovative or technically challenging such as the early statement had promised. The claimed auto-production model is the norm, indeed the DIY method is proudly established here, and it's a fact it never seems to be under a mastery design, professional or accomplished. Everything sounds very cheap and without consistance, weak. Obviously it's a guilty pleasure and maybe a very personnal satisfation for the musicians involved, nothing really valid to waste our precious time. I hope to never find another SMBH recording in the middle of my road unless they seriously think over and over again their music. Sorry guys but that's the double edge sword of self indulgent promotion and exaggerated Marketing!
