Life can be very confusing. Just look at the information you get when you start listening to SUCKERPUNCH. They are a Danish band that started playing together in 2009. Their aim was to adhere to the way of life of the American South, and try and sound likewise. Some ten years later they released "Redneck Gasoline", and somehow the record company Wormholedeath felt it was due a rerelease, which happened on the 21st of April in 2023.
This wasn't their first full length release, by the way. After a few EPs they released "Chasing The Horizon" in 2018. So, "Redneck Gasoline" is their second offering. In the information that we get from the record company they state that the band has an authentic sound. Well, I guess you could call it that if sounding a lot like a lighter version of Australians ROSE TATTOO, mixed with a little bit of Ozzie AC/DC and a smudge of Southern Rock makes you sound authentic. Whatever you want to call it, this is Pure Rock 'n' Roll in optima forma. It therefore will come down to the quality of the songs.
To be quite frank, if you are a Pure Rock 'n' Roll lover, you will be taking all of it in in record time. The songs have body, have a message (however contrite it might be) and are very pleasant to the ears. Those who regularly read my reviews will be aware that if I phrase my views like this, there is always a but. And yes, there is a major one for me. Even though I am enjoying listening to "Redneck Gasoline', I also find that I am drifting off. In other words, SUCKERPUNCH isn't able to hold my attention all the time. They are not living up to their name. they sound more like a light slap on the back of the head, as your teacher would give you to keep you focused. And that is a pity, as the music gives the band enough scope to add some more interesting sounds and influences.
SUCKERPUNCH is not a bad band, but the songs are just too mediocre for me. If they would have added some BLACKFOOT into their mix, they could have wowed me. Now they have just entertained me for most of the time. All of a sudden, the duration of "Redneck Gasoline", 41 minutes, seems a very long time for an album.
