This is another self-financed release and I am more than happy to write a review about it. This time is about STUKA SQUADRON's debut release that saw the light of the day ago through the band's official myspace page. If you click the aforementioned link you will get some misleading visual information about this band. The almost Nazi looks and the kinky dressed models will make you think about the Gothic scene. Add to this the long influences list and you will be thinking this is another FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM/SISTERS OF MERCY wanna-be band and possibly continue your search on the internet for something else. Having listened to this EP more than it is necessary to write a review and in the maximum volume I can say that this would a bad move!
Indeed, the London based band has little to do with the Gothic scene. Their sound is pure Heavy Metal with a hearty guitar based song that will stick to your mind even after the very first CD spin. I do not care about their strange looks (actually the Metal scene is used to this) but I really do care about the fine crafted tracks in this EP. Starting off with Stuka Squadron that kicks in with the trademark siren sound that Luftwaffe killer dive bomber used during the attacks. And then the guitars take over with the ultimate foot-tapping rhythm. There is a vintage feeling in this track that I could identify as NWOBHM influences but in the end it does not matter since the music is addictive. Duke has a distinct timber that can justify the term Gothic mentioned in the band's influences list. Next, there is One-eyed God King with a nice groove with some additional NWOBHM finishing touches especially in the twin guitar harmonies. Despite the fact this is an independent release the sound production is just perfect! The guitar are everywhere without stepping in somebody's foot while the drums keep the rhythm solid as hell. Lovecraft gains some more heaviness fitting like a glove to the lyrics that talk about the ultimate Horror writer of all times and co-creator of the Cthulu mythology. Sadly this EP ends after 26 minutes with another killer track that share the same title with the release. The lyrics talks about motorcycles, blood, Heavy Metal and other cool stuff that go hand-in-hand with the groovy ala Rob Zombie horror attitude.
There is simply no space to add more comments to this CD that I dare to say will find a place in best albums for this year even if it was released in 2008. An unknown band to me made my day by giving away half an hour of groovy music with massive guitars, distinct vocals and enticing attitude. Ladies and gentlemen join the STUKA SQUADRON... Usually METAL TEMPLE does not rate EPs but since I was so pumped listening to We Drink Blood I did what I thought was right.
