After that Thrash Metal trend that started back in 1986 begin to lose its strength in the early years of the 90's, and Metal came back into underground due the trend of Grunge/Alternative Music in the USA, Death Metal took by assault the throne of the Extreme Metal genre, and an invasion of the genre followed. And there's no doubt that some of the genre's classics were released between 1989 and 1994. These classics still inspires a lot of new bands, as can be heard on "DNA of Chaos", the second album of the quintet STORMGRAY that hails from Lithuania.

Their musical work isn't hard to define: a combination between some German Thrash Metal touches with a Death Metal extreme embodiment. It seems that names as NAPALM DEATH (on "Harmony Corruption" days), BENEDICTION, UNLEASHED and SLAYER are important to create the inner core of their musical work, but they have a personality pulsing on their songs. They combine a good technical insight with brutality, and although the quintet's music needs to mature a bit more, the band is on the right path. The sonority of "DNA of Chaos" tries to bring back some elements used on albums recorded on Morrisound Studios (the Mecca for Death Metal bands during the first half of the 90's), so it can be assumed that the band tried to do something old fashioned on Death Metal way, but in a clean and defined way. It works, but could be better.

The band has potential and talent, as shown on songs as the brutal mix between Death Metal and Thrash Metal elements of "When Bood Runs Cold", the catchy rhythms of "Suicide for Pleasure" (this one really has resemblances with NAPALM DEATH on the band's Death Metal days, especially on the grunts), "Fuel Named Hate" (very good guitar riffs can be heard on this one), the oppressive rhythmic work of "Womb of Darkness", and on the brutal "DNA of Chaos"; but they need to mature their ideas a bit more. They're a good band, and the album is good, but they need to put in more of their personal ideas.

For Death Metal lovers, "DNA of Chaos" will be really a good release to listen to, but STORMGREY can do more than is heard on it.
