Time is a Razor

Best described as a Brazilian late 60s/early 70s throwback rock band with unique contemporary twists, STONE HOUSE ON FIRE dropped their third full-length album "Time is a Razor" in late January this year via Electric Valley Records. They have learned to channel psychedelic elements within their sound, remaining unafraid to explore strange atmospheres resulting in dynamically vigorous songs filled with fuzz and grit of the best psychedelic and doom bands. With their first independently produced and released full-length "Buy This Lie" in 2015, they followed just a year later with "Neverending Cycle" this time released through Dinamite Records in 2016. They then embarked on a cycle of nearly endless touring to support their second album. They ended up touring for nearly six years passing through various corners of the country before embarking on a 40-day tour of Europe. At the end of all that touring they got back into the creative headspace and began focusing on their third eventual release.
The new album from STONE HOUSE ON FIRE dives more and more into the 70s and psychedelic atmosphere that they were influenced by while thinning out their more doom rock tendencies. They allowed more space to let the songs breathe, resulting in the expansive jams that the 70s were known for and allowing for a newer atmosphere to enter into their compositions. The album still features Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Marine Sarine - known from DEAFKIDS and specializing in percussion and drums - and Leandro Telntino - drummer and percussionist for AMPLEXOS. Also, shortly after following the release of the album, on March 3, 2022, the band will release their first music video for the album produced by Doyglas Leal who has also worked with the DEAFKIDS. In addition to being available on streaming platforms, to commemorate the album's release, the band have produced a vinyl version available in either white or special printed blue and red patterned design.
Apparently, there is quite the South American stoner/doom/psychedelic rock scene that I've only become more acquainted with recently with LOS NATAS but STONE HOUSE ON FIRE quickly shot to the top of my must listen list with this latest record of theirs. They open with "Bitter Times" which places them strongly in the heavy-blues rock of the past with a heavy fuzzed out guitar playing a funky, fast riff played with relentless rapidity. "Despite" takes a doomy, slower approach with heavy psychedelic hints of guitars drenched in heavy flanger in a slow instrumental section about halfway through while a more energetic solo accompanies a faster section towards the end. But then, surprisingly, "Waterfall" kicks in with a Latin sounding drum solo for the first half the song with other instruments joining sporadically, before the song opens up into a mixture of SABBATH riffage interspersed with more spacey guitar sections to spice things up. It is clearly a highlight of the album and spotlights the special guest percussionists, giving the album and the band in general an authentic and unique texture not seen in other contemporary stoner/psychedelic groups. No doubt STONE HOUSE ON FIRE is something special and brings their Latin culture and roots with them into their music, setting them apart from their peers.
