Memento Mori, Motherfucker
Stone Cadaver

It's a common saying that time heals all wounds. It's a Star Trek saying that time is a predator which stalks us for our whole lives. Time is a heavy concept to grasp from its scale to its passage, but most people only ever consider the idea that time should not be misused, because, simply, time is something we can't get back.
Time spent listening to good music is far from wasted, and what luck for us that we are gifted with the likes of STONE CADAVER, a Denmark-based Stoner Rock/Metal trio who took four years to make sure their sophomore effort, "Memento Mori, Motherfucker" would be remembered, and surely they've created a morbid masterpiece. Fans of crunchy riffs and heavy rhythms will find exactly what they need here.
The first real track, "Realm Of Darkness", teases a more Doomy sound but it doesn't commit so much to that style, resulting instead in a very heavy Stoner Rock for the first half, with a nearly Psychedelic interlude leading to a percussive onslaught for the second half. "Doom Christ" then comes in rather like that first half but with the tempo increased, allowing for a slightly more metallic sound than was being previously used.
A cathedral-ish ambience starts up "Whip The Sinners" before it quickly goes Stoner Metal heavily laced with Rock riffs. After a bridge track, "Diseased And Deceased" comes in with such Stoner orthodoxy you may need to shave your speakers afterwards. Another bridge then leads to the finale "Murder Mountain", a nine-minute monster which begins ominously then drums in another trudging Stoner track before picking up in a big way. It slows down again, gets heavy with effects, then totally powers down and drifts off into an acoustic nether to end the album.
Three short tracks pepper the listing; "The Reckoning" serves as a heavy windup intro, "Paean" is a distorted bassy bridge, and "Fare Thee Well" is an uncredited but beautiful organ/synth affair. Put it all together and this is one excellent Stoner Rock/Metal gem. "Memento Mori, Motherfucker" goes for eight tracks at a bit under thirty-six minutes, but it will feel like a bit under thirty-six lightyears. Remember to tuck and roll when you land.
There is very little to dislike about what STONE CADAVER has done here. Only the most committed Speed Metal fans will be turned off by the relatively sedate pace, but "Memento Mori, Motherfucker" has a momentum all its own. Fans of the Stoner genre will recognize some intentional and unintentional background influences, such as LOWRIDER, or SHRINEBUILDER, and to a lesser extent, 35007, amongst others. We the listeners can only force our own patience as we now wait for album three.
