Who knew that Russia would be the breeding ground for one of the next generation of high-caliber Power and Progressive Metal bands of the 21st century? That's not a rhetorical question and I'd have to give STILVERLIGHT (Saint Petersburg, Russia) a huge thumbs-up for their statement of claim to a share of the Prog/Power throne. Their self-titled album, released November 2014 is a twelve-track masterpiece and deserves the right to stand up to the great names like DRAGONFORCE, KAMELOT, and even RHAPSODY to a certain extent.
Featuring a barrage of drums, riffs, synthesizers, and solos, STILVERLIGHT have managed to burst onto the scene with their debut. There are so many elements from several genres of Metal that it really creates an amazing atmosphere when listening. The vocals are rather folky (think of a Russian KORPIKLAANI) and it can all be described as anything from Thrash, Speed, and Heavy Metal to Power, Progressive, and "Epic" Metal. I love this mixture of styles and it speaks well of the ingenuity of the songwriters and band members.
Let's say these guys go on a big tour. If asked who I think they'd be opening for, I'd say a band like STRATOVARIUS. That being said, I fully believe that if STILVERLIGHT gain enough of a fanbase, they will be headlining their own shows in massive venues in no time. They have just the thing that a huge crowd loves. A harmonious combination of amazing energy, amazing music, (oh, and hopefully an amazing light show to accompany). Even if they just played the songs from "Stilverlight" the set would still be over an hour, complete with highs and lows, fast and slows. This music captivates its listener.
Music like this can only be given true justice with proper recording, mixing, and production. Everything behind the scenes stands up to the job and every note of every instrument is heard with no reservation. It rises to meet your ears and tickle the thought center of your brain. Lyrically speaking, the songs are written out like a story and the theme of each song is present in the words. Personally, I felt as though I was propelled into their world, feeling the chill and emotion while listening to "One Night Before The Winter" and the furious adventure of "Shadowcave". I highly recommend closing your eyes and letting your imagination paint the scene of each strum of the guitar, stroke of the keys, and each second of the choir of voices.
What more can I say about this? The album cover with the blazing "S" is a fitting description to the music, as it invokes images of hope in the midst of chaos. With a tremendous double-bass feel and epic vocals to match the progressions of the guitars and the synthesizer parts, you'll be ready to raise your mighty fists as you are led into the brilliant unknown of the musical quest on this album. So prepare now, as STILVERLIGHT provide the monumental debut soundtrack to your flight on the winds of the night!
