Steve Rothery - The Ghosts Of Pripyat album cover

These days it seems there are countless auditory approaches to create a memorable sonic experience that leaves a lasting impression on the listener. Gimmicks, pyro, masks, and so on come in full force and often take the place of musical textures and fundamentals. However, intermittently we get the opportunity to hear talented musicians paint an audio picture without need of vocal support. Enter STEVE ROTHERY with the progressive rock release "The Ghosts of Pripyat".

This seven track album arrives completely devoid of any vocal tracking and in its place is a full palette of audio diversity and guitar mastery. One of the first things of note within this album is the atmospheric presence and soothing enchantment of the mix. Production is amazing and even though it is a guitar-centered release we hear every bass support and snare cross stick.

As can be expected on an instrumental album song are lengthy and packed with dynamics and waves of buildups and cool downs. "Morpheus" provides ample diversity of guitar riffage and piano key tickling. The true emotion emerges around the 5:30 mark and we get the first taste of amazing soloing. After the introductory track comes to a close there is no feeling of want for the lack of vocals.

The best thing about "The Ghosts of Pripyat" is the complete contribution by each instrument adding texture and variety. You'll hear open snares, brushes, grooving bass lines and truly enthralling guitar melodies. Songs like the expansive "The Old Man of the Sea" and "Summer's End" provide no shortage of melody lines that tell the whole story with no words whatsoever.

The end result is an empowering experience with great sound, feel, and spirituality. Truly, listening to this album in full is like a sonic pilgrimage paying homage to the very best in progressive rock and all aspects of musicianship. Some listeners may find redundancy if looking for more flash, non-traditional flare, or just looking for some vocals but outside of the subjective opinions STEVE ROTHERY and "The Ghosts of Pripyat" provides a comprehensive positive listening experience.
