Steve Hackett - Wolflight album cover

Steve Hackett is an English musician multi-instrument, songwriter and singer. He gained prominence as lead guitarist of the British progressive rock group GENESIS, which he joined in 1970 to 1977. Steve Hackett contributed to six GENESIS studio albums, three live albums and seven singles.

Steve Hackett pursued a long solo career with a lot of studios albums during 35 years. Steve Hackett also co-founded some super groups projects, as GTR with Steve Howe, guitarist of YES & ASIA; this super-band released the self-titled and only one album "GTR", or with SQUACKETT with Chris Squire, also bassist of YES on the album called "A Life Within A Day".

Following the touring (live recorded at Hammersmith & Royal Albert Hall) and release of the box sets of the "Genesis Revisited", Steve Hackett has returned to his 'day job' and released "Wolflight", the first length album since 2011's "Beyond The Shrouded Horizon", with new written solo material.

This whole album is inspired by those ancient tribes who helped to shape Europe, in fact, the world, as we know it. A various of instruments, and unknown from mine, played by some different musicians from these different tribes appear all along this album, you can hear, here and there, as a tar (from Azerbaijan), an Arabian oud (lute), a duduk (Armenian woodwind instrument)...all invoke remote regions and cultures that stretch back across time.

Doing a review of this "Wolflight", it is like a journey on our planet, take time to discover the different people and characters who live, speech is subjective, only music and instruments will make you travel, all the songs take you through the ages of history.

Introduced as a wolf's cry on "Out of the Body" follow by the title track, "Wolflight", a trip of 8 minutes in Mongolia in these ancient times, where the tribes are nomads and the wolf was their totem...the music is orchestral, hauntingly. "Love Song To A Vampire" the single of this album brings you into the life of a vampire, it's also the longest song of the track list, around 9 minutes, with beautiful choirs, magical violins, and one more time, the amazing orchestration by Roger King, followed by an awesome powerful soli guitar of Steve Hackett, a Slavic atmosphere. "Corycian Fire" taking the listener, into the world of 'Games Of Thrones' or 'The Hobbit' with these Arabian rhythms and captivating choirs vocals by Steve himself, revisiting the American History with "Black Thunder" and the fight for civil right. The last 2 tracks that close "Wolflight", "Dust and Dreams", a slow instrumental song with Spanish Arabian touches, and the tribute to his wife Jo, in "Heart Song", a long loving embrace to her.

All along this album, the songs are produced as its best by Roger King, in a progressive rock style...with its ever-changing rhythms and tempos, the quality is everywhere, whatsoever an insistent bass line, or the orchestral choirs and keyboards. Steve is surrounded by the best and finest Brit musicians as Nick Beggs, Rob Townsend and Roger King and Gary O'Toole, to give us this sublime album.

Steve Hackett is unique and only he could be able to offer to our ears a progressive rock masterpiece and it's magnificent!<
