The Goddess Principle (Reissue)
Steel Prophet

Forming in 1983, STEEL PROPHET have certainly been around for quite some time, and with the upcoming re-release of their debut album "The Goddess Principle" they are reminding the metal world of their unique brand of Power Metal.
Opening up with a chilling sounding bass line, "Souls Without Honor" kicks things into motion with a mid-paced epic sounding song, with a very classic sounding Power Metal vocals that comes somewhere between John Arch and Michael Kiske in terms of style and range. This is a great initial track with plenty of old school sounds and style, yet one that would stand up against even today's Power Metal bands with ease, and maybe even show a few of them a thing or two! There's a great breakdown that reprises the initial bass intro before crashing into the rest of the track, and this really keeps the song going really well.
The band really does have plenty to offer from song to song, from the fast paced riffing of "The Inner Voice Silenced" with its staccato melodic riffs to the piano tinged twin song attack of "Ruby Dreams" into "Prophecy Upon Us". However the band definitely shines best during moments when it combines the two, with mid paced grooving riffs leading into fast guitar attacks and then into synth and Piano sections later on, and this is shown best during the band's epic track "Reign Of Christ", with a lot of different sections and moments moving the song forwards and driving this forward as a key track on the album.
The album closes with the track "Parthenogenesis" which is another epic track almost as long as the aforementioned "Reign Of Christ". This one however gets straight to the point with heavy riffs and a guitar solo right off the bat. The song breaks up into cleaner sections later, and the singer performs great on these just like in the louder, heavier parts of the album. This is another track that offers a diverse performance from the band and one that shows why they've stuck at it so long.
The production is pretty good for an album from 1995, and would still be acceptable today really, though not quite as loud and in-your-face as modern production techniques would allow. This isn't necessarily a bad thing at all though, as you can hear everything that's going on and the release is certainly plenty heavy anyway.
Overall this is a good release that should serve to remind people what STEEL PROPHET are capable of and hopefully get fans excited for whatever may come next from the band!
