Lower The Bar
Steel Panther
STEEL PANTHER is a comedic band that plays 80's glam metal but they do it with such tongue in cheek conviction that it sound sounds convincing. Cheesy riffs, raunchy lyrics, and an image that makes you cringe are done so well, so fluid, that as they take the piss out of an entire decade you can also hear the love and respect they have for the bands they make fun of. This album contains lyrical content about everything from butt sex to having a three way with a dog. Obviously the lyrics are a bit extreme but they also exemplify an era of music that was in itself over indulgent sometimes in image and how it viewed the world. The band may have some comedic lyrics but they are very serious musicians and they do know their craft.
Michael Starr is a great vocalist with what seems to be an endless supply of energetic spurts of excitement that echo David Lee Roth, Joe Elliot, and Vince Neil all rolled into one, although I honestly think he is a better singer than any of them. He also has the create ability to create vocal hooks out of the most random and absurd things. For God's sake, the ballad "That's When You Came In," is about a dude getting a blow job but I'll be damned if he doesn't make it catchy as hell when he croons about the woman blowing him. I never thought it would happen, but here we have it: aN anthem about blowies. The rest of the band is in top form. Satchel can shred when he wants and also shows he can be a master of groove. "Wrong Side of the Tracks," rips, with some slick riffs that have groove and bounce. "Pussy Ain't Free," begins with some thick riffs and some head banging guitar that propel the song. His leads are also noteworthy, especially in "I Got What I Want," which features a couple of solos that shred.
When I think of glam metal I usually don't picture a good bass player but Foxx provides a firm backbone throughout the album and even gets some time to shine, such as on the aforementioned "I Got What I Want," that features a thumping bass line. "Now The Fun Starts," is another nice showcase for him, with the bass actually creating the bulk of the song's atmosphere, giving the song some weight despite the lyrics being about giving someone the shocker and having sex with Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner, among other things. Stix is a great drummer, bring in a full plate of meat and potatoes to support the songs and keep the beat going. He reminds me a lot of Tommy Lee; the very nature of the music doesn't really lend itself to anything overly complex but what he plays he plays very, very well. If you like 80's glam metal or any music with a lot of humor injected then you'll want to pick this up. If you are already a fan of STEEL PANTHER, you know what you are getting into. Otherwise, once you get past the insane humor, you'll find a very competent band.
