Good old UK Doom Metal! Well the genre did start pretty much in the old country according to many and you will always have that comparison with the forefathers of Metal, BLACK SABBATH. It's pretty much a given that most bands in the Sludge Metal, Doom Metal or Stoner Metal will always have that association with the the godfathers of the genre. The band started in 2007 and this is their second full-length album. The genre has gotten a huge lift these last few 5-6 years and we discovered so many awesome bands throughout those years. I mean bands like UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS, DESTROYER OF LIGHT, WEEDEATER, ORCHID among many many others. It's like a revival of sorts and us Metal fans are the beneficiaries of the new movement in the genre.

But in this case, SPACE WITCH actually is an Instrumental Doom Metal band. I guess they wanted the music to speak for itself and boy does it! You do have some screaming here and there and a little bit of narration (did I detect parts of horror or sci-fi movies, I am not entirely sure to be honest). These are not deterrents to the rest of the music. I guess they are more an accompanying piece to the rest of this opus. It sounds like the 70's, a lot of effects in the guitars and it's very toned down. This could have been awesome back when the roots of the genre were gaining ground everywhere. The music is a throwback to the origins of the genre. Though they added a lot of special effects to the music and it felt like you were thrown into a very old Science Fiction movie, you have to wicked elements here and there that really catches you off guard.

I love the names of the songs, I felt it really mixed well with the name of the band. Their all about space and cosmology. I just really enjoyed the fact that they wanted to keep the same theme. At least you have a real constant. Music wise, well it's a mix of the newer bands like I previously mentioned and some elements of the older bands in the genre. Even if it clocks at almost 45 minutes for only 4 songs, it doesn't drag on and I never felt the songs were too long in length. My interest was the same at the beginning of the song until the last note. That's always something I look for in bands, even more in new bands I tend to discover because of Metal Temple. This band has what it takes to take the next step and it was a pleasant surprise and an honor to review. One of the best albums in the genre this year, bar none.
