SOUNDGEIST started as a trio in May 2004 with the name DEVIL'S INTERVAL. Later Stelios and Dimitris joined the group from Heraklion, Crete. The Fine Line Between is the band's first demo that was released in 2007. The band has been described as Prog/psych and definitely the influences are verifying it, but the quintet has a long road to walk. Let's take the tracks one by one:

Lots of progressive bands, and not only, have used the oriental scale. In this release all the songs apart from two count on this melody. New Millenium Babylon makes the start and as the name indicates, oriental melodies with special effects find their way out of the speakers and lead you in thinking, well, that might be interesting. The vocals need a lot of improvement though.

Narrow is a keyboards-dominated song, it starts with a nice melody but somewhere in the middle probably the members suffer a DREAM THEATER crisis, the vocals style doesn't match and generally the sound requires more attention. The percussion holds a boring line, but there might be a possibility that it is because of sound arrangements.

Death Kiss enters with an electronic intro and has an oriental cut (again) and simply is nothing special as the sound is far from what the word decent defines. Insanity (both parts) is lightened with some OZRIC TENTACLES and some PORCUPINE TREE sparkles. Both parts last about a quarter of an hour and there are nice melodies, some jazz parts, some parts that don't connect at all and unbelievably great fuzz in the guitars. This fuzzy sound, combined with the aggression that Dimitris tries to express, is quite tiring.

Divine Light makes you think (in the first minute) that it is a more settled piece and then, suddenly, a vigorous outbreak takes place, keyboards out of nowhere are heard and in the end  there is a strong RUSH influence. For the extended version of New Millennium Babylon I haven't got much to say, as it doesn't convince my ears that there was a reason for being there.

I think that the band has a lot of ideas, a lot of influences that finds interesting in adding in the sound, but as they are struggling and experimenting with melody and changes somehow they get a bit confused. If they calm down, work more with their ideas instead of putting them hastily in a song I believe that SOUNDGEIST will have much more to give as a band. Dimitris has to practice a lot and find his singing limits; and, last but not least, the sound, which undermines the whole effort of the band. Anyway, this release fell in my hands with a two year delay and - hence - I want to believe that the next release will be, by far, better. As for now...
