Infernal Agony
Soulcarrion
SOULCARRION hailing from Warzaw, Poland were formed in 2019 and they are a Death Metal band. "Infernal Agony" is the band's first full-length album and it was mixed and mastered by Mariusz Konieczny at Heavy Gear. The album has a length of just 28 minutes and it was released via Polish label Godz Ov War Productions, which has a number of Death, Black, and Doom Metal bands among their roster.
"Infernal Overkill" starts strong with "Piles Of Ashes", a fast and aggressive opening with grim guitar riffing, crunching bass lines, plenty of double-bass drumming and blast-beats, and brutal growls at the lower end of the guttural range. There is a lot of lead guitar contribution with a short solo. The melody patterns are spine-chilling. "Realm Of Pain" has an even darker and more aggressive sound, frantic speed combined with relentless blast-beat assaults. The sound has plenty of blackening vibes and there is a short down-tempo part with another cool lead guitar solo. "Depth Of Fear" seamlessly continues with the blood-freezing sound and the speed, but with a bit more catchiness in the riffing and the leads. "Depth Of Fear" is surely one of the album highlights and it is available as video with the YouTube link given below.
"Oblivion" is another blast-beat hammering with the same type of riffing as for the opening tracks. It is a very direct pummeling without any technicality and the lead guitars are absent from the track. "Revenge Is Mine" has a slow start at mid-tempo, before a frantic outburst of riffing, drumming, bass lines, and growls are introduced by the lead guitars. "Cage Of Nothingness" is in principle not different from "Revenge Is Mine": a short doom-laden guitar intro is followed by a blast-beat driven hammering with simple, but effective guitar riffing and the growls which keep it all together. There is little variation between the tracks, most notably is the use of the lead guitars now and then, "Cage Of Nothingness" has even a few lead guitar solos and they are the highlights of the track.
The title song does not differ from the rest of the album, it is slightly less dominated by the blast-beats and there are a few more tempo changes switching from blistering pace to mid-tempo and back. The lead guitar solo makes again the difference, it is very well contributing to the overall melodic frame of the song. "Night Ceremony" starts with a short lead guitar solo before the riffing and the bass lines drive the song forward. The lead guitar contributions could have been really the dominant element in the song, if there would not have been the repetitive riffing extending the track unnecessarily. I should say one word to the vocals. Although they fit very well into the sound, there is very little variation, which is a missed opportunity. A few screams added now and then would have given the tracks something extra. The album finishes with "World Of Putridity" and this one is not different to the tracks before.
"Infernal Agony" is a decent debut album. It is a traditional Death Metal album with a focus on darkness and doom. SOULCARRION do not re-invent the Death Metal wheel, what they do is solid. I like the lead guitars, the bass lines, and the drumming. Apart from that, I feel the riffing and the vocals need more versatility as well as the songwriting needs improvement. The album is well produced. SOULCARRION left a first marker in the Death Metal arena, whether they will become a recognizable force, remains to be seen.
