Death of Sorrow
Sorrow
New York City, NY based Death Doom band SORROW formed in 1991. They released an EP and a full-length, and then...hiatus. Now, they are back, 21 years later, with "Death of Sorrow," which has eight songs. "Doom the World" is first. It rattles with that Old School Doom sound, like the early work of BLACK SABBATH. The vocals are harsh, and scratchy, almost like IHSAHN. "Judicial Falsity" has a bit of a quicker pace at first, but eventually slows to a lumbering groove. As with a lot of Doom Metal, the riffs are simple, but I have heard more inventive riffs from the genre.
"Remembered Eternally" is another tale of doom, wrapped in tones of desperation and depression. The riff is a bit livelier but they still pound that sound down your throat. "Scar" is the first song that goes out of that low registry a bit, but again, the riffing is pretty elementary. They venture out a little, like peeking through the blinds, but don't formally commit. "Required Irrationality" is slow and low, and creeps up on you like a zombie trying to gain his footing and walk so he can hunt. I like the audible bass notes, but he often plays the same notes as the rhythm guitarist.
"Someone Else's Blood" goes even deeper into the ominous Doom sound. But the pacing is quicker. Still, and I hate to be repetitive, but the riffs are just too simple on the album, and the band doesn't stray from that sound. "Hidden Fear" is a nine-minute beast. Through the course of the song, there are some meter changes but that low Doom sound pretty much dominates the song. "Funeral March" closes the album. Now this song, is something special. The piano notes are sweet, though sad. Overall, and I hate to say it, but the band hasn't evolved much since their inception. This is about what you might expect to hear from a 90's Doom band. Nothing fancy, and fairly bland.
