SONS OF REVOLUTION's self-titled debut release is a combination of 60s/70s Blues music and Rock. This four-piece Blues Rock band from Italy is made up of guitarist Mario Alessiani, vocalist Paolo Ceritano, bassist Davide Coccagna and drummer Romolo Di Gregorio.
The album opens with "I Feel Like Crying", a song with a strong retro vibe. The riffs here are catchy, but Paolo's voice - which is slightly nasal - seems to be in conflict with this song. Next, tuned-down guitar riffs are abound in "I'm Coming Home", infusing the track with a retro flavor and a general catchiness throughout the entirety of the song. Halfway through it slows down to a mellow passage complete with drum beats and a soothing guitar solo that soon becomes louder and faster before the track arrives at an abrupt end.
"Wasted Youth" is filled with distorted riffs and a general down-tempo atmosphere. The guitar solo here is impressive, with some squealing effects thrown in for good measure. However, the guitar riffs within the bridge seem to be in conflict with the vocals. "No Way Out" has a melancholic tinge to it. Unfortunately, the squealing guitar solo and the reverberating effect towards the end of the tune can get somewhat annoying.
"Rebel For A Day" is a very dynamic song which utilizes varying chord progressions and vocal effects. The song starts off with a brief guitar riff followed by Paolo's heavily distorted voice. In my opinion the vocal distortion effect is overused in this track, and I personally think it would be much better if the distortion effect was only to be used on selected parts of the song instead of on the whole track. The second half of this track sounds much more upbeat, with a somewhat country feel to it. The almost nine-minute-long closing track "Slide 'Em" kicks off with a very abrasive intro filled with distorted guitar riffs; to the point where it sounds rather aggravating. On the whole, the vocals here are average, the guitar riffs get boring after a while and the entire tune just sounds uninspired.
Overall, SONS OF REVOLUTION's debut album has some occasionally noteworthy compositions and solos here and there, but the use of squealing guitar effects in certain tracks can get a bit irritating after some time. Generally, the band's music is simply decent but not particularly mind-blowing. Moreover, I have mixed feelings towards Paolo's voice. He sounds fine in some songs, but really awkward in other. In short, he sounds as if he would be better suited to front a Country Rock band.
Do give this album a shot if you like rock with a good dose of retro Blues influences.
