Sonic Circus
SONIC CIRCUS is a Progressive Rock trio from Melbourne, Australia. There isn't much information available on the webpage, so we are going to have to let the music do the talking here. "Aeroplane" opens with album, with big vocal accents. Though the guitar riff is fairly simple, it's easy to get sucked into their sound. Genre wise...it's hard to say. At times, they flirt with the Alternative/Grunge genre, at other times, the Progressive Rock genre. The chorus is where they really make their mark.
"Over the Line" is a five-minute, bluesy guitar-riff driven number. Again, the riff is simple and the focus is mostly on the comely vocals. I can only imagine seeing this hand live...they probably are a very good live act. Another big chorus keeps the album moving forward. "Everything" is just under six minutes. It opens slowly, the harmonic vocals come in. It's a mid-tempo song but it really kicks in gear in the chorus. I've said this many times before, some good bands are just not good at writing a sticking, memorable chorus, but SONIC CIRCUS sure can. The verses are more ambient, allow the chorus to really shine.
"The River" has an easy listening riff with a little wah-wah thrown in there. The vocals are light and easy at first, while the bass guitar thumps away. The vocalist goes for broke in the chorus. I just can't quite place who he reminds me of as a singer. He doesn't have a crazy range, but the music doesn't call for it either. He delivers however in all ranges covered solidly. That is, until the big scream before the bridge. "Bringing me Down" is just over six minutes in length, fortifying why this could be labeled as Progressive music, but the tones are just slightly there. The riff in this song is solid and sturdy, kind of like ALICE IN CHAINS for me, but more positive in nature. They absolutely dive that riff down your throat.
"Take me Away" is over eight minutes in length. It opens with a slow and steady guitar riff and harmonized vocals. Here in this song they have some Stoner elements present, but again, just on the surface. It continues on this hypnotic pattern through the end of the song, then there is a long and weird fade-out. Overall, this is honest Hard Rock/Metal the bridges the past with the present very well. Though the riffs are easy, the amount of genuine personality the band puts into their music is noteworthy. I also can't say enough about the vocals. He fits the music perfectly. This is an album that I would recommend for sure.
